  • My name is Sharma Barker (29). I am a Pacey N.C.M.A (National Childminding Association) Registered Insured Ofsted Childminder. I have two children of my own, a boy called Remell (7), and a girl called Sianne (6); we also have a cat called ‘Fluffy’ who is full immunised. I and my children love spending quality time together in various types of activities such as creative play, through to drawing and painting. I find it rewarding helping to fulfil their needs, as we explore from outdoor and indoor play.
I live in a spacious 4 bedroom house with three good sized garden, there is a separate playroom for fun and story time, a large living area where we eat meals and do Art and Crafts
and baking activities (dependant of age), and also can be used for quiet time. The toilet and bathroom is situated downstairs. I also live near a water park, playgrounds and also a great big
field near my home for outings and for larger activities such as Cricket, Dancing and skittles.
I am registered to care for up to Six children under the age of 8 years. All records of children and parents are kept accurate and up to date, they are stored securely, and kept confidential at all times.
Children’s needs are best met when space and resources allow children to play and learn.
The environment should be warm and welcoming to children and parents. It should be safe and secure, with space organised and used to promote children’s development.
I use Pacey/National Child Minding Association contracts and keep full and confidential written records as required of me by Ofsted. As a childminder I will keep records, policies and procedures required for the efficient and safe management of my childminding practice and also to promote the welfare, care and learning of all children. These help parents to understand my views and practices concerning childcare and also serve to lay some ground rules. Each child had his/her own individual file which contains the contract, day care record of information, medication record and accident and incidents record. These are stored securely and confidentiality is maintained at all times. I keep parents informed of their child’s day either verbally or in their child’s daily diary. I also have three folders for each child to document their developmental/progress through observations and photographs. These are also shared with parents.
As Parents you are the central adults in your child’s life and the ones making decisions on their behalf. I will endeavour to work closely with you in order to carry out your wishes for your child wherever I can. It is therefore important that we have an excellent communication system. I appreciate that as a working Parent you will be in a rush to go to work in the mornings and in the evenings you may well be tired and need to go as quickly as possible, so I like to use a Parent/Childminder contact book for daily communications. I will complete a page each day that will include what your child has eaten, naps, activities, milestones achieved etc. I would request that you use this book to note down if your child has had a disturb sleep, is not feeling well or any other piece of information that may help me to provide him/her with the best care I can. I am always happy to discuss your child and their care with you at any time that is convenient to us both, whether in person or over the phone. I would also appreciate it if you could inform me if there are any changes to contact numbers for yourselves, including work and mobile numbers and those of your emergency contacts.
I will make an individual activity plan for each child in my care – this will be in close consultation with parents. This activity plan will be formulated from the observations I have made of each individual child and will relate to their abilities and stage of development. The activity plan will be regularly reviewed and adapted accordingly. The activities and toys and learning resources available to each child will be age and ability appropriate. I will strive to provide your child with an environment that will be caring, fun and stimulating. I will plan my play in line with the EYFS. (Early Years Foundation Stage)
I believe routine is important for a child to feel secure in their environment. In the morning the children are generally having breakfast, followed by free play and some singing. For those on a full day or after school we have many and varied activities. I have books, toys, equipment, resources and theme-based activities to stimulate development in all age groups. We also visit toddler/play groups. Some parents like their school age children to complete homework, whilst also giving the children some time to just relax after a long day at school. If time and weather permits, a trip to the local playground or other places like to the park, may also take place after school. I will try to vary the activities so that the children will have the opportunity to explore many new and different things, whilst also giving them time to learn to play with others and by themselves. In addition, I will ask children to help setting and clearing the table at mealtimes and tidy up after activities. Hopefully this will teach them that to have fun you also have certain chores that need to be done.
I have a fully insured 7 seated car so we often go out to mums and tots, soft play, childminder pop ins and days out. So we are not just at home all day.In the summer, children must be supplied with hats and sun cream. They will travel in my car, with age appropriate safety restraints and will wear wrist bands with my details inside in case of emergency.
I will always speak to the children before an outing about road safety and talking to strangers. I encourage children to hold hands and walk nicely together whilst out.
I regard snack and meal times as a very important part of the day. Eating represents a social time for children and adults and helps children to learn about healthy eating. I provide nutritious food at all meals avoiding large quantities of fat, sugar, salt, artificial additives, preservatives and colourings. My aim is to provide children with a healthy, balanced and tasty diet using a variety of colours, textures, tastes and also foods from different cultures. I aim to meet the full requirements of Ofsted’s care standards on food and drink. I am willing to puree food for babies but bottles must be provided from home, if your child has any dietary needs this can be discussed and catered for. Parents will be advised if I have any concerns about children’s eating habits and I will work with parents to supply food that the child likes.
