Reiki is an Eastern practice of channeling energy (as does Thai Chi and meditation). With Reiki, energy is chanelled by the therapist whilst the client can lie or sit on a comfortable position (Often a therapy couch). Reiki originated in Tibet, and was re introduced by Mikao Usui in Japan at the begining of the last century.
There are many reasons you may wish to try Reiki. Stress and anxiety are common. Not least because of the far reaching effects these can have on the physical body as well as the emotions.
Stress can unbalance the systems, and one reason is that stress releases an excess of cortisol into the body. In acute stress (Short lived) this helps you to deal with a situation. Cortisol and epinephrine/adrenaline are the main hormones released as part of the 'fight or flight' scenario). Long term (Chronic) stress, although, often less noticable because it is constantly a part of your life, this extended stress, if left unmanaged, cause many unpleasant side effects and might include, disturbed sleep, fatigue, food cravings, weight gain, raised blood sugar levels, symptoms of anxiety, low mood.
