    residential care services
At Anchor Lodge, we enable our residents to enjoy as much independence and activity as they would like, with the comfort of knowing that healthcare and personal assistance is there when they most need it.

Maybe you or a loved one simply doesn’t have the desire or physical strength to clean the house anymore, look after the garden or you are simply worried about health, safety and security. Our caring and trained staff will oversee all of that. We encourage our residents to be involved into the running of our household as little or as much as they are willing and able to. That’s a benefit of living in a small home. It is JUST like home.

We treat each and every resident as an individual. As part of the process of moving in, we talk in depth to each resident and their families so that we have a clear and detailed view of each resident’s needs, hobbies, interests, former careers, favourite foods and so on.

The initial assessment of care needs goes into an individualised Plan of Care that is constantly monitored and updated. This means that – even as care needs change over time – each resident and their family can be sure they’re receiving the most appropriate care for them.

If you have a favourite hobby, bring it with you. If you have personal effects that you can’t bear to leave, they are welcome too, subject to them being able to fit into your new downsized home. You can also look forward to new and lasting friendships along the way. And your pets are welcome too. We just need to do a risk and care assessment for them too.

    • We promote an atmosphere of independence and respect an individual’s privacy, as well as their personality and character. Your choices are paramount to us

    • Staff who are energetic, caring, creative and committed to you

    • Private and well-equipped double and single rooms with private WCs

    • Medical assistance always available. We have very close link with healthcare practitioners

    • Dining, salon services, books and computer facility

    • A programme of physical and social activities.

    alzheimers/dementia care
We constantly seek to improve the needs of our older people suffering with Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Huntingtons or cognitive impairment. We do this by focusing on the individual. Because we are a small happy ship, our staffing has remained the same for many years with hardly any of them leaving over the years. Residents develop a sense of familiarity with the same carers. We become a new family where they may have difficulty remembering the some of the people they knew before. We believe this is crucial in the sense of well being of dementia sufferers. Larger care homes may offer bell and whistles with amenities, but we believe its people that make a home feel like home. The same people day in day out. We do not wear uniforms so that residents feel like they are at home. We do, however, wear name badges as a reminder.

We adopt a person centred approach. It is a tried and tested method of care planning for dementia sufferers. We measure the success of our approach to dementia and Alzheimer’s care in varied ways. It can be when a resident who struggles everyday engages in a satisfying activity. Or a resident who is anxious feels a sense of comfort or peace. It comes when a resident is made happy by remembering a daily routine brought on by our staff involving residents in their tasks with the.

Because dementia and Alzheimer’s affects one’s memory skills, Anchor Lodge’s care team coaches residents in a kind and compassionate way that presents clues from resident’s previous lifestyle. They also closely monitor and manage behaviour changes, so residents can stay involved with daily activities safely and be “present” for each new day.

    Furthermore, we strive to:

    • Ease stressful situations by keeping to daily routines and having similar staff schedules

    • Be alert to “sundowning,” when some dementia care residents become more anxious during nighttime hours and provide night-time waking cover

    • Provide safe areas for wandering and engagement along the way.

    korsakoff's syndrome
Alcoholic dementia can also be known as Wernicke-Korsakoff's syndrome. The affect of years of chronic alcohol abuse causes loss of short-term and in some cases long term memory.

Korsakoff's syndrome is part of a condition known as Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome. This consists of two separate but related stages: Wernicke's Encephalopathy followed by Korsakoff's Syndrome. However, not everyone has a clear case of Wernicke's Encephalopathy before Korsakoff's Syndrome develops. Wernicke's is a chronic deficiency of Thiamine B1.

However, if Wernicke's is left untreated, or is not treated adequately or in time, permanent brain damage may result. If Wernicke's Encephalopathy is left untreated, or is not treated soon enough, Korsakoff's Syndrome follows in many cases.

The main symptom of Korsakoff's is memory loss– particularly of events that occur after the onset of the condition. In some cases, memories of the more distant past can also be affected.

    Other symptoms may include:

    • difficulty in acquiring new information or learning new skills

    • change in personality – at one extreme the person may show apathy (unconcern, lack of emotional reaction), or at the other, talkative and repetitivebehavior

    • lack of insight into the condition – even a person with large gaps in their memory may believe that their memory is functioning normally

    • confabulation – where a person invents events to fill the gaps in memory. For example, a person who has been in hospital for several weeks may talk convincingly about having just visited their aunt earlier that day. This is more common in the early stages of the illness.

    How We Can Help?

At Anchor Lodge, we have experience of providing services for older people with alcohol-related brain damage including Korsakoff's. Residents usually come in to us when they are at the later stages of the disease. Please note, we do not offer detox. We would be the next step after treatment and clients have controlled their alcohol consumption. We would assess clients with a view to support and manage the condition and encourage them to regain life skills and enthusiasm they may have lost.

We will put a care plan in place working with you and your family where the goals are to have the best quality of life possible and to prevent the condition from getting worse.

We would ensure that a well balanced, nourishing diet including fresh fruits and vegetables and less red meats and processed, refined foods is provided. Clients are usually suffer from dehydration and so a re-hydration plan to restore blood volume and electrolytes would be started.

A thiamin (vitamin B1) injection may improve symptoms of confusion or delirium, difficulties with vision and eye movement, and muscle in-coordination. Vitamin B1 may be given by injection into a vein or a muscle or by mouth. Thiamine does not generally improve loss of memory and intellect associated with Korsakoff psychosis but can stop prevent the condition from progressing.

Residents usually continue taking thiamine supplementation, as well as other vitamins and electrolytes, until a well-balanced diet can be maintained. Long-term supplementation may be required in residents who cannot maintain adequate nutritional intake.

We work closely with our local GP team to ensure the correct medications are prescribed to ensure that a good quality of life is achieved. There is some good research available that certain medications can help those suffering from alcoholic related brain damage live better and sometimes even improve their condition.

    parkinson's care
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder. This means symptoms continue and worsen over time. There are no cures--only treatment options to manage the symptoms. PD occurs when cells in the brain’s substantia niagra which produce Dopamine begin to die. Dopamine sends signals to the brain that control movement and coordination. The messages to the brain controlling movement are slowed. This leaves a person incapable of controlling movement. Speech and movement are affected and symptoms worsen over time.

Anchor Lodge is here to help those suffering from Parkinsons who are having difficulty living in their own home. We can help with day-to-day tasks such as dressing, bathing, housekeeping, Parkinsons medication management, meals, round-the-clock emergency care, and a social/recreational environment. We can also give loved ones a break from day to day care through respite stays or day care.

We can also help with arranging physiotherapy, and occupational therapy particularly suited to Parkinsons sufferers.

    mental health
Serious mental health conditions currently affect every one in 100 people. Some require long term support in order to help them manage their condition. In some cases these conditions continue into old age and are added to by other care needs such as mobility issues and dementia. Our staff are provided training specialist to the needs of our residents including Depravation of Liberty, Mental Capacity, challenging behaviour and anxiety training as well as all the mandatory training courses relevant to providing services to older people.

Some of the most common conditions that we can support for those aged over 65 may include:

    • Bipolar (sometimes referred to as manic depression)

    • Schizophrenia

    • Personality disorders

    • Anxiety
