- Recent changes to the law mean that private landlords must now place tenants' deposits in government-authorised schemes for safekeeping. Whilst the majority of landlords behave responsibly, there are a minority who are unaware of the new law, or who even choose to flout it completely, unwilling to give up the power that has been so often misused in the past.
George Crofts, a recent graduate of Leeds' own BPP Law School, and Harald Martinsen of Harrogate, still a PhD law student at the University of Leeds, came together to form a new service to help tenants and landlords get the best from the new system. They have now recruited further team members to keep up with demand, and estimate they are currently dealing with over £350, 000 in deposit value in dispute.
They are the leading operators in this new high volume claims market; tenancy deposit protection for residential tenancies. After recent legislative amendments and Court of Appeal judgments, it is clear that millions of current and former tenants whose tenancy deposit has not been properly protected could recover up to three times their deposit amount as ‘Additional Award’.
DAS deals with issues such as unfair deductions, unprotected deposits and compensation for non-compliance to the deposit protection laws, negotiations with landlords about deposits, etc.
